Veterans Exemptions – Town Property Taxes
On February 18, 2016 the Town Board passed Local Law 1-2016 expanding town property tax exemptions for qualifying veterans who have served in the United States Armed Services. The new exemptions match the county levels and those of most of the municipalities in Columbia County. The new exemption amounts on the assessed value of your property are:
- For wartime service, the exemption amount is $24,000
- For combat service, the exemption amount is an additional $16,000
- For service connected disability, the exemption is up to $80,000
Veterans Exemptions – School District Property Taxes
You may also be eligible for a veteran’s tax exemption that the Chatham Central School District recently approved (their Administrator is Mike Chudy, and his number is 392-1511). Please pass this important information along to any veteran you know.
Veterans must provide proof of their service (a DD214 in the case of U.S. Army), and meet other requirements, such as dates of service.
Note: A surviving spouse of an entitled vet may still be entitled to the exemption. It is for veterans whose primary residents is in the Town of Austerlitz only.
If you have any questions please contact Pam Cook, Austerlitz Town Assessor, at 392-3260 ext 305. Her hours are Friday from 1:00 to 4:30 pm.

There are two types of STAR exemptions:
Basic STAR is available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the resident owners’ and their spouse’s income is less than $500,000. As of April 8, 2015, it exempts the first $31,800 of the full value of a home from school taxes. There are no age restrictions for a Basic Star exemption.
Enhanced STAR provides an increased benefit for the primary residences of senior citizens (age 65 and older) with qualifying incomes. As of April 8, 2015, it exempts the first $69,220 of the full value of a home from school taxes as of 2016-17 school tax bills. You must have less than $84,550 in adjusted gross income.
This exemption is also based on the household, so either resident or survivor is entitled to it. For more detailed information, please click here. Please verify all exemption amounts and eligibility requirements with the tax assessor.
STAR exemptions apply only to school district taxes.
